Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help
in trouble.
2
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives
way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea…
9
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he
breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire.
10
“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be
exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
11
The Lord of hosts is with us; the
God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
Fear. Its crippling.
It overwhelms us. It inhibits us. It can control us. It keeps us from following
God.
Psalm 46 gives a
little perspective on how powerful God is and why we should not fear. It says
that God is our help. He is our hiding place, our shelter from trouble. God.
God who creates; who commands wars; who can break bows, shatter spears, and
burn chariots without even lifting a finger. He is control. He is guarding us.
He is going before us in battle. Why fear?
Instead, remember who
God is. “Be still, and know that I am God.” In perspective with all that we
fear, God is so much bigger than those things. He made us- he knows our future.
He controls the wind and waves- he can keep us safe. He loves us beyond
measure- he will guard our hearts. What do you fear? Compare it to who God is.
Deuteronomy 31:8- It is
the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or
forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
Isaiah 41:13- For I, the Lord your God,
hold your
right hand;
it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.
