Psalm 52:1-4

Psalm 52
Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The steadfast love of God endures all the day.
Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit.
You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah
You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue.

Why do people get so excited over their sin? They brag about the party they attended, the way they lied about this, snuck out there, used a girl, led on a guy, outsmarted their parents, hid something from a spouse, tried this drug, drank that drink, ripped off someone else, or verbally tore someone apart. If they aren’t bragging about what they already did, they are plotting what they will do. How can I do what I want and still get away with it? How can I esteem myself more highly than others? How can I fulfill the desires of my flesh?

Scripture cuts straight to the truth. You love evil more than good (vs. 3). We say we love God but when it comes down to it, we pursue our own sinful desires more than we pursue Him. We love lying more than truth; we plot our destruction, work deceit, and speak words that devour the souls of others and ourselves.

Despite our selfish evil, verse one says, “The steadfast love of God endures all the day.” What if we boasted about that? Or plotted how to share God’s love more freely? Esteemed others more highly than ourselves and built them up with our words rather than crushing them with our speech? Let us die to ourselves, rule over our flesh, and seek the approval of our Savior rather than men.

Galatians 2:20- I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 1:10- For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
