Psalm 63
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my
soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where
there is no water.
Earnestly I seek you… my soul thirsts for you…. My
flesh faints for you. The passion behind these statements is breathtaking. As
if I am in a dry desert land where there is no water, I thirst after you, God.
Is this your heart’s desire? Are you consumed with a yearning for God? Or does
your relationship with Him waver between hot and cold, passion and apathy?
Later in this chapter, David says that God’s love is
better than life to Him. That just as how his hunger is satisfied with rich,
fine foods, his soul is satisfied with God. He longs for more of God’s presence
in His life.
Despite being a Christian, it took many years for
this longing for God to come to fruition in my life. Although I knew Him, and
said I wanted more of Him, I was not passionate and had totally quenched my
relationship with Him. At times, I would come back from camp or a church service
on fire for God… but that would quickly fade and apart from church or when I
was prompted to pray, I hardly acknowledged God, let alone craved more of Him.
Why? Because I was not earnestly seeking Him. I didn’t spend time in Scripture
to deepen my relationship with God. I didn’t flee from sin and turn to run to
Him. Instead I craved unhealthy things… attention from boys, acceptance from
friends, and the approval of others because those are the relationships I fed.
My passion was wasted on things that had no value. I wasted years of my
relationship with God.
Stop living with a half-hearted desire to grow in
your relationship with God. Develop your passion by pursuing Him- seek Him
earnestly and keep your heart focused solely on Him.
Luke 10:27- And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
John 6:35- Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
