Psalm 90
2
Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever
you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are
God.
3
You return man to dust
and say, “Return, O
children of man!”
4
For a thousand years in your sight are
but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.
12
So teach us to number our days
that we may get a
heart of wisdom.
It
is incredible to think about God and that He is eternal. Not only will He be for
forever, He has been for forever. Before the mountains or the Earth were
formed, God was. For me, that is nearly impossible to grasp, but it makes me
stand in awe of God and who He is.
In
comparison, verse 3 reminds us that God is who returns us to dust. We were made
by Him and cease to be according to His command. We are just a vapor according
to James, a shadow according to 1st Chronicles, wind according to Job,
and like the grass that withers according to Isaiah.
After
reflecting on these things in the first half of chapter 90, verse 12 says ‘teach
us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.’ Are you living in the
realization that your days are numbered? That you will not be he forever… maybe
not even tomorrow? When we gain this perspective, we live wisely. We don’t put
things off for later. We prioritize our lives around things that really matter
and have eternal value. We value our loved ones and live for the gospel. Do you
have this perspective? Are you putting off something that needs to be done
today?
Luke
12:40- You also must be
ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Proverbs
27:1- Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not
know what a day may bring.
