Ephesians 3
14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,
15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be
strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so
that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and
grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the
saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and
to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled
with all the fullness of God.
This
is the prayer of Paul for the believers in Ephesus and should be our prayer for
each other (and even ourselves!). Paul prays for these things:
For you to be
strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being – (vs. 16) Your inner
being is your own spirit, so Paul is basically praying for your spirit to be
strengthened through the Holy Spirit. Why would you want a strong spirit? So that Christ may dwell in your heart through
faith – (vs. 17) He actually answers it himself, saying so that Christ will
live in your because of your faith. So that you will be a believer! & so
that if you already are, your faith with be strengthened so that you will not
be tossed or shaken by doubt and in your hard times, you will turn directly to Him.
Being rooted and
grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is
the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ
that surpasses all knowledge – (vs. 17b-19a)
Basically, Paul is saying that he wants those in Ephesus to know how
much God loves them. Of course, the height, depth, length, and breadth of that
love surpasses our knowledge- it is far more than we can understand, but I think we
sometimes forget that Christ really loves us. Yes we are imperfect. Yes we are
ridiculous sometimes. He really does just love us despite ourselves. Why is this important?
That you may be filled
with all the fullness of God – (vs 19b)- so you are full of God. That you
will be so full of God’s love for you, that you won’t be able to help but show
it to others. When you really meditate on the incomprehensive measure of God’s
love for you, you have to tell others. You are just so humbled, grateful, and
in awe that it shines through everything you do.
This
is my prayer for each of you!
