Hebrews 1
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by
the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his
Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the
world.
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his
nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making
purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having
become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more
excellent than theirs.
The author of Hebrews begins the book with a description of God the
Son. We know a lot about Jesus, and his ministry on Earth, particularly the
last three years of His life. But a lot of times I think we forget that Jesus
existed as God the Son long before He ever came as a baby.
The passage begins by laying out the transition that occurred. In Old
Testament times, God spoke to His people through prophets. But once Jesus came,
God spoke through His Son. Then, Hebrews gives us some information about God
the Son.
The Son is the appointed heir of all things- He is the first-born and
has the rights to inheritance- the cool thing? As believers, we are coheirs
with Christ (Rom. 8:17).
The Son was present at creation and was pivotal to creating the world.
Verse two says God created the world through the Son. In John 1, we get the
picture that the Son is the Word that spoke things into being.
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact imprint of His
nature- It doesn’t say the Son looks like the Father. They are probably very
different. Instead it says He matches the Father’s glory and nature.
The Son upholds the universe by the word of his power- it is clear
that the Son is powerful and has control over many things, apparently including
the universe- but remember, the Son does the Father’s will- they are linked.
The Son purified our sins- He came in flesh as Christ to atone for our
sins once and for all. He is our high priest and advocate
The Son is seated at the right hand of God in Heaven- (until He
returns!!).
The Son is much more superior and excellent than the angels.
