I Timothy 6:6-8

I Timothy 6

But godliness with contentment is great gain,

for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.

But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.

Its so easy to get caught up in the mantra of society- bigger, faster, more! We always want the next newest phone, a better car, a bigger house… On the surface, this may seem fine. We just have big dreams and want nice stuff. But this passage reminds us that none of our ‘stuff’ will come with us when we die. It will be meaningless. Is it really how we should spending our resources?

And when does the desire for more cease? We train ourselves to want more or better, so when are we ever content that it is enough? Paul says that if we have food and clothing, we should be content. Its not about our possessions, our status, or the monetary value of our stuff. When you can be content with what you have, you can focus more entirely on pursuing Christ and the direction of the Holy Spirit rather than being consumed by making more money to get more stuff.

  1. I love this, it is a reminder that our minds are so easily swayed by what the world tells us is important.
