Titus 3
3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to
various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by
others and hating one another.
4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he
saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to
his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom
he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so
that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope
of eternal life.
I
love this passage in Titus. It reminds us that there is nothing we did on our
own to earn the right to salvation.
It
says, we were once… and it gives list of sinful traits- foolish, disobedient,
slaves to pleasure, haters, etc. We were lost in our transgression.
But (vs. 4), because of
God’s goodness and loving kindness- He saved us (vs. 5)—Not because of our
works—but because of his mercy. Surely we did not earn our salvation through
our foolish, disobedient character. Instead, this passage makes it clear that
the only reason we have salvation is because of the goodness and mercy of God.
The
great news about this? If you don’t know Christ, you don’t have to earn the
right to Salvation. You can come as you are, even if you are a mess. God only
requires you come with a genuine and humble heart. He will save you, simply
because He is a merciful and loving God.
The
passage continues and says that were are regenerated and renewed by the Holy Spirit,
which we have through Christ, so that we can be justified by his grace, and
heirs to eternal life. Once we do accept Christ, we are instantly justified-
our debt to sin is abolished and we are seen as covered by the blood of our
spotless lamb.
