I Corinthians 15
33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
34 Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on
sinning.
If
you read chapter 15, this verse seems to come out of nowhere. The whole chapter
is about Christ, his resurrection, and the future resurrection of believers.
Then, all of a sudden, this is stuck in there. But I don’t think it is just
haphazard. I think these concepts are all linked. I think Paul is reminding us
of the importance of our friends, those we surround ourselves with on a regular
basis, also being believers in Christ.
Do
not be deceived- Bad company ruins good morals. Who is the company you are
keeping? Are they a good influence on you? Are they dragging you down or
encouraging you to become stronger in your walk with Christ? Basically, this
verse is saying that you are kidding yourself if you think you can be immersed
in a sinful environment and not be effected. Not only will it probably lead you
to sin as well, it says it ruins good morals. It affects what you believe. You
begin to reason differently and rationalize things according to the world’s
beliefs.
The
next verse continues and basically says wake up from this delusional fog, and
stop sinning. Its not okay to just continue in sin, repeating the same
mistakes. Wake up. Stop sinning. Make a change in your life. Surround yourself
with different people. Don’t immerse yourself in sin. Step up and as verse 58
says, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,
knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. Start intentionally
living for Christ.
